In Germany, Carl Carls is known as the inventor and advocate of the English Opening, therefore these tournaments are organized by England as well as by Germany. The Bremer Schachgesellschaft von 1877 kindly supports these tournaments - this is the chess club in which Carls played chess for many decades. Carls was born in Varel near Bremen and lived in Bremen until his death. The start date of the tournament (11. September 2013) is the 55th anniversary of his death.
